Baptismal font, 1788-1789.

Walnut baptismal font; octagonal domed lid with carved flame finial that serves as a handle and carved lip; font is octagonal and sits on a stop-fluted column with dentil molding at the cornice and carved molding at the bottom; the base is an octagonal baluster with carved molding. Detail of bottom with inscription and commemorative plaque.

George Claypoole, Jr. was active as a cabinetmaker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the second half of the eighteenth century. Gostelowe, an apprentice of George Claypoole, had set up a shop in Philadelphia by 1764. After serving in the Revolutionary War, he opened another establishment. He became one of Philadelphia's most respected craftsmen, leading the Gentlemen Cabinet and Chairmakers in the Grand Federal Procession of 1788.
